We found this idea on no time for flashcards but we tweaked it. We decided to do the "I is for Island" idea but also do some textures. I cut out the I with some brown felt. We found some bark and leaves and dirt from outside. I also dug up some blue streamers from our craft bin. We just assembled it with the sand (a half circle cut out of construction paper) and glued the dirt to it. Then we glued the leaves on the tree and the bark on the trunk. We talked about soft, rough, smooth, crinkly, and grainy. The boys really enjoyed this. I let Will cut his parts out (except the felt was hard for him so I did that) and I let Isaac try to cut his as well. He is getting better but still needs some practice, which he will only get if I let him do it on his own.
