First up we went to the gardens that are near us. We walked around and searched for butterflies and talked about what they eat. Then of course, we just played in the Discovery Gardens. We stayed there for hours and if we weren't all hungry we would have stayed longer. We only saw eight other people the entire time and no kids but he boys didn't mind. They played to their hearts content. Pictures are posted here.
Next we made finger print butterflies. We cut out our flowers, stems, and leaves and glued them. Then we made fingerprints with our ink pad and finally, we drew wings and the boys colored them.
Even Eli got to do one and he wanted his taped right next to Will and Isaac's.
Tell me those aren't beautiful blue eyes...

We did a fun butterfly activity over the summer that my kids loved. Maybe yours will, too? I can't remember where we got the idea from, but here's what we did:
We painted paper towels (we were supposed to use coffee filters, but the paper towels were awesome) with WATERCOLORS. We set them aside to dry.
While the papertowels dried, we made caterpillars out of clothespins and pompoms. We just glued the pom poms onto the clothes pin, and then I wraped a pipe cleaner around the front and made antanea. I used the hot glue gun to glue.
Once all was dried we talked about how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. We put the papertowels into the clothespins (pinched them in the center and put into the opening) and then it was a butterfly! The kids had so much fun flying their butterflies around. This sounds confusing. I will try and find the link for you.

PS--the directions say to use a coffee filter with markers and then to spray the filter. I just used water colors on a paper towel and it worked really well. Have fun!

It's so fun to see your boys learn and do different stuff!
We did a butterfly theme earlier in the summer. Aside from various crafts, we also did one with the kids' blankets that reinforced the butterfly life cycle. We laid the blankets on the ground and "chewed" them and talked about how caterpillars get super hungry and tank up so their tummies are full in the cocoon. Then we rolled up in the blanket (y'know, in our cocoons). Finally, we used our blankets as wings when we became butterflies.
Abby STILL begs to play this game three months later.
I love all the ideas! The boys will love the craft and the blanket cocoon idea.
